Leaving Arago
Dear Arago peers and friends!
In January 2017, I joined Arago as Director of Technology Research, taking over the responsibility for market research, market intelligence, analyst relations and technology evangelism. Furthermore, I was appointed as one of Arago’s official spokespersons for media, at events and keynotes. I had the honor to work with a team of talented people including Diana Tomic, Varsha Shivam and Benedikt Shepp. The team and his support helped me to publish 38 written pieces like research articles, book chapters or comments in national and international media as well as podcasts. In addition, I attended 36 events providing keynotes, speeches or being a part of panel discussions.
On April 30, I am leaving Arago. I want to say thank you to all my Arago fellows, clients, analysts, bloggers and journalists I’ve been working with over the years. It was a great pleasure to collaborate with all of you and I hope we have the chance to stay in touch.

I’ve kept it as a secret and less than a handful of people knew it so far. On January 1, I’ve joined artificial intelligence (AI) pioneer Arago as „Director Market Research & Technology Evangelism“. In my role, I am responsible for analysis & content as well as the areas market intelligence & analyst relations and am one of Arago’s official spokespersons for media, at events and for keynotes. I am very excited about this new gig since I’ll work with a team of smart and highly talented people and can still make use of my 7+ years experiences as a technology analyst.
About Arago and HIRO
Furthermore, Arago is one of the most compelling companies in the AI field focusing on building tools for the B2B sector using AI and analytical components. Started in 1995 founder and CEO Chris Boos managed it to maintain Arago’s start-up mentality giving the entire company an agile pathway.
Arago’s AI-driven core solution HIRO is built to run and automate the entire IT stack from IT operations up to business processes supported by sophisticated algorithms. HIRO’s autonomic problem solving AI leverages its algorithm to analyze large problem sets, apply XML-code based Knowledge Items (KIs) and past experiences to find a solution and retain gained knowledge to future proof against similar challenges. This knowledge is not only retained for reference but can be applied to address different issues and deployed in dynamic environments. Through its utilization of memory and contextual thinking, HIRO simulates human problem solving behavior.
HIRO and the Freeciv Strategy Challenge
In the world of AI it has become best practice to demonstrate a system’s capability using a game. Arago and HIRO are taking the gaming challenge by competing against Freeciv players from around the world. Arago decided to let HIRO play Freeciv since
- the number of possible games in Freeciv is exponentially higher compared to e.g. Go or Chess.
- Freeciv is not a perfect information game that gives players insight into the whole world and a view of opponents’ moves.
- Freeciv imitates real world randomness.
In addition, HIRO is primed to address this challenge because instead of simply using trial and error to statistically understand “what” needs to be done, it employs human intelligence to understand “why”.
If you want to learn more about my role, Arago and HIRO just get in touch with me via email, Twitter or check frequently out where you can meet me in person.
Leaving Crisp Research
Dear Crisp Research clients and friends,
In February 2014, I joined Crisp Research as senior analyst & cloud practice lead, taking over the responsibility for the entire cloud computing, IT infrastructure, IT platforms, IT automation and Internet of Things research. The last years it was fun to help propagating the brand “Crisp Research” and its awareness in the German and international markets from scratch.
I had the honor to work with a team of talented people including Maximilian Hille, Bjoern Boettcher, Meike Buch et al. The team and his support helped me to publish 93 research notes as well as 45 studies, strategy papers and analyst reports, including:
- The first German Platform-as-a-Service compendium and the “SAP Monsoon“ chapter in the book “SAP on the Cloud.“
- Studies: „Container in the Enterprise“, „Data Sovereignty as Success Factor in the Digital Age“, “OpenStack as Foundation for Open Cloud Architectures,” “Cloud Price-Performance Evaluation,“ “OpenStack in the Enterprise,“ “Digital Business Readiness,“ and “Multi-Cloud-Management in the German Mittelstand.“
- Vendor comparison: “IoT Backend Providers“ and “Managed Public Cloud Providers.“
I also had the honor to speak at several national and international summits and vendor conferences resulting in
Not to forget the German and international media like Computerwoche, CIO Magazin, LANline, Silicon.de, New York Times, Forbes Magazin, Handelsblatt, Die Zeit, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Wirtschaftswoche, Manager Magazin, Harvard Business Manager et al. who cited me as part of their articles – leading to
Now, after almost three years I am leaving Crisp Research. I want to say thank you to all my Crisp Research fellows, clients, analyst relations, PR agencies and journalists I’ve been working with over the years. It was a great pleasure to collaborate with all of you and I hope we have the chance to stay in touch.

Together with other big names such as Marc Benioff (CEO, Salesforce), Werner Vogels (CTO, Amazon) or Marten Mickos (CEO, Eucalyptus Inc.), Rene Buest is named as one of the „Top 100 Cloud Professionals to Follow on G+“ by GetVOIP.

So far, I only had told selected people about it. Now it’s official. I will end my work at New Age Disruption and start at the consulting and analyst firm Crisp Research as a senior analyst, where I take over the responsibility for covering cloud computing and IT infrastructures.
I am looking forward to the new task, as this position, on the one hand, opens new ways and means for me. On the other hand, because I will work directly with Dr. Carlo Velten and Steve Janata. Carlo and Steve both are among the top IT analysts and cloud experts in Germany. Prior to founding Crisp Research in October 2013 both have hold the solitary cloud knowledge at Experton Group and among other things underlined this with multiple cloud vendor benchmarks. I am thus ended up at just the right environment.
Crisp Research focused on the areas of cloud computing and digital business, and developed with a team of software developers also own cloud-based research services for IT vendors and IT users. With Crisp Analytics already exists a cloud platform that reflects the own research workflow. Here, among other things, the awareness and impact of certain vendors, products and technologies are detected and assessed.
Since Crisp Research is headquartered in Kassel, one may meet me there for a coffee in the future or just arrange a meeting with me on one or the other interesting IT event.
I’ll still be a member of the Gigaom Research Analyst Network.

Companies are attempting to reduce IT costs while simultaneously increasing efficiency and productivity by standardizing their IT environments with virtualization technologies and Cloud Computing. However, in most cases, companies overlook the fact that standardization alone is no longer enough to achieve these objectives. The main reasons for productivity losses lie in the IT operation itself, where human error during routine tasks lead to further errors due to inattentiveness or work overload and time pressure. The introduction of customized automation solutions, which are managed and controlled by intelligent expert systems, unburden employees and prevent errors. Furthermore, on average, over half of all IT activities are invested in the manual processing of routine tasks. These include the administration of applications, systems and the infrastructure.
What concepts currently exist in the large market for automation technologies? What impact do modern solutions have on companies and which could potentially lead to a paradigm shift? This paper answers these questions and introduces a selection of three providers. Not all providers on the market can be taken into account due to their extensive number. Besides large providers such as CA, HP, IBM and Automic there are also a large number of small providers, such as NetIQ or Kaseya. Instead, this paper focuses on three providers whose solutions print media suggests offer huge potential. These include the BMC Bladelogic Automation Suite, the IPsoft IPCenter and the arago AutoPilot.
